PRESS RELEASE: Highway Inn Opens Tūtū’s Place — A New Café Concept at Bishop Museum

“Tūtū” is the affectionate term for grandmother in Hawaiian, from the longer tūtū wahine (grandmother). Tūtū’s Place is a warm and welcoming café, located at the Bishop Museum in Kapālama, inspired by the wisdom and traditions passed down by our kūpuna (elders). It is named in honor of our grandmother, Nancy Toguchi, who co-founded Highway Inn with our grandfather, Seiichi Toguchi, in 1947. While our grandfather cooked the food we are still known for today, it was Grandma Nancy who made sure that each guest felt welcome and enjoyed the comfort of food and hospitality. Because of her, Tūtū’s Place was created with ‘ohana (family) and community in mind.
We hope dining with us makes you recall going to your tūtū’s house to eat and hoping you would get to enjoy your favorite mea ‘ai (food).
Tūtū’s Place offers a space to connect, to tell stories of our food and our history—where visitors and locals, guests and staff, and different generations can come together to “talk story.” As the on-campus dining experience, Tūtū’s Place extends the Museum’s educational experience into the dining room.
